Smack Down!

Death of a Newspaper post. The piece of lumber that kept our twice weekly paper above the elements met a sudden demise Xmas plus  1. We were out for blood until Jack notice this confession attached to our front door.... Laughter took over the mood as we all reminisced over the number of mailboxes we had executed throughout our youth without a single oz. of remorse let alone a confession or offer to fix. (unless we got caught!) We will call Adam today and inform him of his last minute pardon. Thus ending 2008 on a high note.

Later Xmas

Kathy got her back rub in and decided to make use of the flat water and new Kayak gloves.

She survived, Which means it's a matter of time before she recruits the males of our island to join her. All is well in Paradise at 13 degrees Fahrenheit.

Come to Papa

THERE IS A GOD!  This is a picture of KK and Jack bringing in the alter. 5.6  gal keg of Alaskan Amber to be nestled oh so gently into its "NEW KEGERATOR!!!"

Kathy said whom ever she ran into while arranging this Cathedral of Libation mentioned she should be put up for "Wife of the Year".  I'm voting early and often.  I need to get a C2O fill at the local welding store and get Jack to take me off "beer restriction", and I'll meet you guys in paridise.....

If you need friends its either a lottery win or a kegerator and Alaska doesn't have a lottery.

Xmas early AM

Start of Xmas day 2008!  Jack said he couldn't sleep  from about 4 a.m. onward and thus couldn't let his parents sleep in past 7:30. KK was up late with bows and wrap doing the boys righ as always.  This year we were a bit lazy making the to/from cards which added the usual "oooops I think thats for ....." Jacks list included the never exciting to a 12 yr old clothing selection, spy camera tank, (every yr for the past 2 the cats have destroyed the wiring in  a matter of days of these things! Doesn't Santa learn anything!) some billiard gear, and the Holy Grail, an apple Itouch. That's the last we'll see from him...

KK got some relaxing apparatuses/massagers, 1 -  2008 electronic device to keep her "involved" in the present, and a few gifts to be worked on throughout the year.. Who knows.... bobbles, trinkets or hard labor...

Ga Ga Gamers!

Jack and his buddies Kordell and Tate. They have some of the fastest and most nimble fingers and minds at this address at least. Ah, if we only lived full time in a virtual world..........

Eagles

We have a pair of  Bald Eagles that live in the trees a few houses down. They keep an eye on our deck for any thing that would resemble food. Apparently the former owners would feed them. They can see if you walk out the door with a bag of chicken parts or if you do your best eagle call they will launch immediately toward you and circle in front of the house. Timing is semi important but they will make up for your aim when snatching food out of mid air. Any action from them usually will bring ravens in pretty quick. The cats realize trouble when they see it and stay close to the door.

Starting my day

Wicked cold sunrises
Big Moon Mornings

XMAS 10 days out

It's getting to be Xmas! Though most of Santa's gifts are already included in the paint, windows, stylish carpeting and view of the new house, Kathy keeps the boys and pets on track for the holidays. We acquired a tree from the area at the end of the road, being careful this time to pick a type that doesn't go "Charlie Brown" on us in a day or two. The family decorated the tree in a minimalist way fearing its branches could take only soooo much tinsel. Lights are going up as the mood hits, Blue seems to be the color this year. We don't want to be the new neighbors on the block that over do it "Griswald Style"
Cold the last few days with the biggest tides of the year. Looks like we're OK with a 21 foot tide and a long haul to the water when its way out.

Winter STorm

Always exciting! Predicted 20 inches of snow.... we shall see. Obviously we got 6 or so.... so far. I drove home in 4 inches of unplowed slosh last night. a little messy, but no incidents. Power went out about 2 minutes after I got home, school started 1 hr late this am. Bunch of down trees on our old street. Arching power lines... oh what FUN!
I have to go to work ... later, than I'll get to see how much fun everyone is really having. I predict a few broken bones, alot of falls and a few car accidents... I'll keep you posted.
Eaglecrest, our little ski area should open this weekend. That will make everyone happy!! Including me... even though I rarely downhill ski. I could cross country tomorrow? Gotta go shovel the drive... kinda my zen thing to do in the morning. Little I-pod/headphones... happy girl

A bright new day

This is the amazing view from my living room.... Whoa! pinch me!! YIpEE!! Many projects planned for the day. But first, a little coffee and view appreciation.

Speckle's walk about

Just when we were patting ourselves on the back for how smoothly everything was going. Speck took a 4 day walk about. Let him out for a quick outdoor potty break and FLASH.... no more Speck. Lost him on Thanksgiving day....
Called Humane Society, animal control, put posters in the neighborhood. Yesterday eve, Jack & I were walking door to door, stopped @ the falling down locked shack. Thanks to Jacks great hearing... a small mew came from the rear of the building. Our little sneak was in the building. He was happy to see us... I was SUPER happy to see him. Had to drag is little body through the small hole in the door. Tears of joy!!! Made it to the house (across the street) he is sooooooooooo grounded. No more outside ventures for him ... (in the near future)

Bye Fritz Cove :(

The old palace.... almost cleaned out. One more load... REALLY! John could work as a mover if he stops flying. I lasted maybe 2 hrs a day.... he moved washers/dryer/file cabinets/furniture and could still stand up!!
Think my moving career is OVER!
We have decided we are burning it all or selling the house fully furnished for the next move. (I think we are hoping that is MANY years from now)
Kinda sad to say goodbye to Fritz... cause that was an AWESOME place. Enjoyed working on it and quite proud of the final product. BYE

NEW HOUSE

YEAH!!!
We are finally in...!!! Here are the boys standing in front of our new digs... beachside. We have alot of work to do... getting organized, finding the underwear, silverwear, you know important stuff!
While I love snow... the snow has stayed away long enough for us to schlup all of our stuff from one house to the other.
Yesterday, I realized..... I really am a hoarder... don't tell anyone!

Future residence

Wow....stay tuned to the continuing house saga of the Garrard/Kartchner. Pretty much changes weekly!

I do LIKE this weeks plan.... move to a house that is done... on the water. This week we will explore the options of that plan.

Here is a photo of the water side of the house.... amazing covered porch, both upstairs and downstairs. It is screaming for me to do a little landscaping... a nice blank slate. The inside has some pluses, some minuses... but nothing that we can't live with....!

klondyke road race

Last weekend finished a road race that travels from Skagway, AK to Whitehorse, Yukon. 1000 teams, 10 teamates, legs of 8-16 miles, starts in the eve, ends mid-day.
Sounds like fun!!?
We had a blast. Our team the "12 hr holds" all folks based out of the ED. WE didn't win the race, but I sure we won the party.
My running career for this summer ceases w/ this event. The rain is now side ways and heavy!! Weather is cooling abit. Now we wait for snow to begin our outside fun!

The Harvest

It was a rainy, cool, Alaska summer. I would have been more successful had the weather cooperated. Still, I am proud of my small, but lovely harvest.
Super motivated to attempt some sustainable living. Eating locally, etc. Takes alot of energy in Ak... unfortunately of the fossil fuel type. Always hopefully for next year. John has sorta agreed to build me a greenhouse..... just haven't to figure out where. STay tuned.

Bea..ioch

It looks abit like Newport beach but thats waterfront for ya!

Indian Cove

http://www.flickr.com/photos/28355747@N02/sets/72157607137369623/show/

I got off abit late after paying the rent and headed over to indian Cove. Bumpy muddy road just past the ferry terminal. The houses are kind of stuck together as I'm sure you're a ware but I found the place just as th neighbor was wandering around. I think her name is Patricia (but don't quote me) and asked if they were having an open house tomorrow. She said yes and we began to talk about the house.

The elderly lady who lived there died after a heart problem a few years ago leaving her husband to fend for himself. he was in early stages of alzheimers and did't fair too well. long story short he committed suicide not in the house because he didn't want tolive with out his wife. She said it seemed more romantic than sad and it didn't happen in the house.

I guess there are two sons, 1 local, that has taken care of (looked after ) the place since then. The house she thinks has been on the market for about 2 months , all or their stuff mostly fuiture I guess is still inside. She bought the place next door a few years ago and has put 300K into it upgrading and making a B&B out of it. Nice gal you'd probably be have vino's every afternoon talking remodels with her.

Great view as you can see by the prelim pics, looking thru the windows from the deck to the inside, you'd probably set an early time schedule to remove the popcorn ceiling surface and paint some non white colors in the interior.

Bottom floor is relatively open floor plan . there is a pool table a loom , lots of yarn (good stuff) with access to a bed room and bath on one side and the workshop/garage on the other. Appaereantly they raised the workshop ceiling which made the seond story bedroom a "low ceiling room" above it. She said it might be 6'8" but you'd hve too do a walk thru tosee if it was really uncomfortable. (entertainment/office)

you could probably enclose part of the lower porch as a green house if you wanted. you would be giving up a view from below but thats the price youpay for $600 tomatoes.

The streets are not city owned so there is a community pot for grading and snow plowing. Pretty tight between houses, you would be giving up the garden for the beach.(whichI think you would use). There is room for a deck and hot tub out front. They still have a couple of rusty wheels amongst the grass towards the tide line.

She thinks its a great deal, she thinks its assesed at 670K but who knows, She thought it has "good bones" and given the chance she would have bought this house over hers.

I have plans to do the open house but my schedule tomorrow is tight. There is a lock box on the door so it looks like we can set up aan appointment at any time.

Best of luck on your race, Jack had a good time going and hangin at school early.

All is good, paid the rent, and looking forward to whatever we put into motion

Love me

I'm hanging in the land of the midnight sun. The only problem I've had is that its always cloud (but light outside) There are no trees here just rolling hills and a few bears, moose, wolves, no bald eagles. The flying is OK, nothing too scary, I move drillrs out to their sites (3) and take them supplies when they need them. I live in a small hotel type building, with food made 3 time a day in the cafeteria. I have one more week left, I don't think my plans include staying way from Juneau when you and Kye are there but I'll try to stay out of the way as much as possible. Lots of bugs but I think they're starting to tapper off on their life cycle.

How it hanging in the South? Did you drive Grandpa crazy asking for the DSL? Have you gone to any more movies? My computer is on sometimes when I'm flying so I don't see you message until I get back from flying. The computer is in the office so I get to check my email usually in the morning and after my shift (4pm local)

the deck

How awesome is this?!!! AWESOME!!
John has finished the deck. Isn't is the most gorgeous thing you have ever seen? Can you tell I love it?
We had a little party to celebrate? But, it poured... oh well summer in Juneau? The hot tub is tucked in it's own little space, surrounded by great smelling ceder. If your in the hood, come check it out!

Celebration

Juneau was the site of Celebration 2008. A gathering of Native Alaskans/Indians from the Northwest region. Lots of great color in blankets/hats and traditional outfits....amazing drumming & traditional dance. Jack and I went to watch the opening parade... it was awsome! Jack has a buddy in one of the dance groups, unfortunately we missed him, but saw his folks.

Planting/Plans

It has been a huge month.... since my last pondering... we scrapped the big house and traveled 360 degrees back to the original plan of building the garage apt.
Done, the plans are drawn up... hope to get it ready for engineer in May, city in June, build in Sept. We shall seee....
I have turned to planting.... we had a week of pure sunshine! Felt like summer, it is at least spring in AK. My friend has a big greenhouse, I have basically taken it over and plan to be the green thumb. Last try @ tomatoes, in a big greenhouse... we shall seeeeee?

Trash & Travel

Working on taxes for 48hrs and putting together a picture book for the house. Leads my mind to wander.
I continue to ponder trash.... read No Impact Man. I have begun looking @ all the trash I produce and am astounded by the amt and I recycle most things. You can not buy anything that is not covered in plastic, surrounding by plastic or is contained in plastic. EGADS!
I actually ordered some bamboo silverware today... to go mobile with me... take out food, plastic silverware/plates etc. I have gotten into the habit of bringing my bags to the store... one small step....... trying to adapt a new habit every month. Leave one more thing out or try another idea.
The pending house project has me going "holy crap" Should we? Shouldn't we? Talk about waste.. yikes! We live in 1000 sq feet now.. comfortably... then we will find junk to fill up 2400 sq feet of space.. that needs to be cleaned, heated, etc. HMMMMM?
In financially getting ready for this project, I have been selling off stock, trying to sell Bisbee house and getting Spring rented... Now... I have a bunch of $$ sitting around screaming @ me... I mentioned to John the other day ... perhaps we should take off a year and cruise around... an early bucket list knock off.. We are all healthy, happy and wise. Jack is still a very likeable kid and might enjoy a journey (or not) Mentally pondering the idea?
Anyway, I am off to go talk to the tax man... this ideas may all go out the door after he tells me how much to write to Uncle Sam. Ick! Not my favorite uncle!

Nearing April

April is right around the corner.... the skis are clean and clear. Five days of sunshine... makes a Juneauite a little stir crazy.
Feeling abit manic. That is a good thing... work has gotten difficult in the last week. We went to electronic medical records.... I love computers!!
Jack and I did alot of travel back and forth to AZ in March, spent some time with the folks... worked here and there.
Last trip to Tucson was quite productive. Got the bisbee house cleaned out... still slowly getting rid a junk! It seems never ending.....
JACK and I had a bit of a bump in our week... leading to a few manical mommy moments, but I think we worked through it.
I have now become quite focused on finishing up my winter project.. as it looks like spring is aournd the corner. Don't like to spend much time inside the house during the summer.... my brain is already planting. I haven't decided how much energy I am going to put in my yard this summer. My brain says stop... but my mind says ... GO!
Stay tuned .....

Home away from home

Sitting here in my ever improving ...dang near cute guesthouse on Spring Street.
The kitchen turned out great! Paint.. huge improvedment from the previously orange walls. New sink... love it! It needs a few more homey touches like rugs and paintings and viola! Done! Phil.. did a great job on power... this place has plugs everywhere .... freakin exciting!

Work was okay... everyone in Tucson has the flu too..... even though it is in the paper and on the radio... people seem stunned to hear such news...I knew there was an outbreak and I don't even live here?
Had dinner with Maria tonight @ Kingfisher, yummy fish, fabulous company...we got to hang out, talk without the usual distractions! Missed Murph though... dang:(

Now... for the dirty work. Time to paw through all the remaining junk next door. Like do you want your old lacrosee stick? This is just one of the million questions I may pose over the next several days. Time to bring home the old cookie jar? I am pondering the idea.
Totally fried from last nights... late night... got in @ 2am... long day of sitting ..... then up and off to work. Jack is haning with Kyler on the mtn... I think he is happy!

Mardi gras

Fat Tuesday

Despite my grumbling and disgust because "no one was coming" We had a great Mardi Gras celebration. Nice mix of people, great food, plenty of hurricaines.
Not a stunning array of outfits, but I am beginning to realize... there are few people in the world that "like" to dress up.... okay maybe just me?

Last week we braved the financial markets, I basically got out of the stock market and we refinanced the Fritz Cove cabin. I am prepping all $$ toward MEN/Penn. Planning on selling the Bisbee shack.... Presently getting info about contructions loans. I can't say I get it yet... but I will soon.

Prepping for the mansion... this week I am going to call our contractor and see where we are at? We were able to get the survey done before all the weather. Excavator man, Brent was never able to do any dirt work, too cold, too frozen... winter in AK, we shall wait til Spring. This summer, I think the only utility left??? is electricity? I imagine the road will have to be beefed up for all the trucks/vehicles going up and down. Other than that... the lot.. is ready? Not sure we are ready?

Had a COLD week... wow...! then a nice dumping of a foot or snow or so... now it is raining? Ugh! We got the 2 feet of snow off the porch roof, never being quite sure how much weight on japanese joinery is okay? Taking advantage of the snow..I CC skied around the lake last week, cold but beautiful, then skate skied. Went 100 yards and gave up. Such perseverance! Oh well, they say it is hard when it is cold? I just think it is hard. I have another lesson this week!

Enough of the local update, someday pictures will accompany this exciting blog....stay tuned

Thursday, January 31, 2008

Oh.... I'am sore...

Well there.......

Busy day, running around. I had my skate ski lesson, not sure I am going to be able to walk tomorrow. I didn't freeze to death in 10 degree weather. It was sunny and nice. Costco for Hurricaine ingrediants, hospital for a mtg, paid the mtg/land.

Talked to Mac today, nothing new... have to wait until you get home and then make some decisions. Got nothing done on the costumes today.... cross your fingers I'll stay motivated enough to finish. Hey .. invite RAY and company to the party.

Your picture on the net is a nice one... you look good. No double chin, not too shiny, looks professional or something.

Jack and I had a lovely breakfast dinner while you were out. Jack is suffering... every pet of a cat gives him a big ZAP!! It is a bit dry on the inside...
We are off to bed... I am exhausted and it is 9pm.

love, the panhandle folks
aka, Tropics of Alaska

Jack's computer gets to come to work with me. Hmmmmm, wonder why?

Baby It's cold outside

Arrive to -22 degrees in Fairbank. I had no idea the it was quie this big. we have no car so I think we'll be indoors at the Westmark the whole time. I see the fed dropped he rate another .5% who knows how that shakes out market drops anyway........ Not too much good shwag so far at the display guys but I'll keep my eye open for flashing light junk. Camera has no card in it so I don't have any pics so far to send along. Will check in tomorrow

Love Me

A balmy 9 degrees

I write from the tropics of Alaska.... especially compared to Fairbanks?! We are having a flurry of light fluffy snow along with our 9 degrees... weird?
Enjoyed your little spicey, sausage rice, bean combo last night. Yum! you are hired to cook for the party. I am plowing forward with masks and costumes... it is slowly coming together, probably not my best work.. but by no means my worst. Watched Phathom yesterday, loved the movie.. but not soooo inspiring from the black and white outfit perspective. I may decorate today and get together the hurricaine mixture. Thinking I need to drum up a few more chefs for the bash.
Jack and I did some homework last night, he is eating cereal and I am of course on the morning blog.
Stay warm in the far North, have fun!
